Squealing noise from engine bay?

CKim - Yeah, the noise will go away once it starts turning fast enough. Somehow it wasn't desgined well for low speed spinning or something.

So do I loosen the tension or tighten it? (looks like bobbrown is saying to tighten it... but he might just be missing a verb there) Will this get rid of the sound completely?

I graduated in June of 2000 as a mechanical engineer. I'm back up in the South Bay, but I manage to make it down to SB every now and then.

I did say tighten. I added one full turn to the screw, which really isn't that much. Maybe 5 extra pounds of tension. Try BadAss' suggestion if mine doesn't work.

CKim - With all the pullies I went through, I'm convinced that having that belt too tight makes the noise worse, especially in the long run. The last one I put on I tested ad nauseum with the belt tension and looser seems to be the key. Of course, it all depends on the pulley, I'm sure! If you ever find a good replacement pulley, please post your findings. I haven't bothered to search because I'm still under warranty for another 90K miles and it's just as easy to get new ones.

Hmm... the noise went away and I didn't do anything.

I get slight squealing from the JR pulley belts or bearings, I'm not sure which, when the ambient temperature is very cold (less 45-50F). After about 4-5 blocks, the squealing progressivly goes away. Those BANDO belts or JR pulley bearings don't like the cold temps.

Dammit! The stupid squealing came back today while driving to work!

Hopefully it'll just disappear again. =)

I'll try to loosen the SC belt... but dammit.. I couldn't get the bolts loose that hold the idler pulley in place. Looks like I tightened them a tad too much the last time I adjusted them.

dude, I get the exact same thing. Some days my belts squeel, usually I can hear it when I'm idleing an dsome days it goes away. I've had my tensioner pulley replaced, but it still comes back every once in a while.

I had the same thing happen to my car. I got the pullies replaced. Some of squealing went away.... occasionally there was still some there. It wasn't until the SC was removed that I noticed that the belts were beginning to wear and crack. That would be my best guess.
